ये बात है सन 1975 की जब अमेरिका में रहने वाला एक शख्स टोनी बुरी तरीके से बिमार हो जाता है। जिसके बाद उसकी वाइफ लिजा उसे वहां के सबसे बड़े हॉस्पिटल में एडमिट करती है। वहां पर डॉक्टर टोनी के एक के बाद एक टेस्ट करते हैं। लेकिन किसी भी टेस्ट में कुछ नहीं निकला। डॉक्टर परेशान हो (effects of superstition) गए उन्होंने सब कर के देख लिया मगर टोनी की बिमारी का पता ही नहीं लग रहा था। फिर हॉस्पिटल के एक डॉक्टर ने टोनी की वाइफ से पूछा कि क्या वो किसी बात से परेशान हैं। इस पर लिजा बताती हैं कि उन्हें एक बाबा ने श्राप दिया था कि वो कुछ ही दिनों में मर जाएंगें ये उसी श्राप का असर हैं अब वो नहीं बचेगें।
ये सब सुनने के बाद डॉक्टर टोनी के पास जाते हैं और कहते हैं कि हम उस बाबा से मिले हैं वो एक फ्रॉड बाबा है। जब हमने पुलिस में उसकी शिकायत की तो उसने पुलिस को सारी बात बता दी है। डॉक्टर ने टोनी को कहा कि उसने तुम्हारे खाने में एक में छिपकली मिलाकर तुम्हें धोखे से खिला दी है और वो तुम्हें अंदर से कहा रही है। ये कहने के बाद डॉक्टर टोनी को एक उल्टी करे का इंजेक्शन लगाते हैं। जिसके बाद टोनी को काफी वॉमिट हुई। वॉमिट में डॉक्टर एक छिपकली उसे दिखा देते हैं और कहते हैं अब तुम ठीक हो जाओगें। क्योंकि छिपकली बाहर आ गई है। उसके अगले दिन डॉक्टर टोनी के पास आकर पूछते हैं कि अब तुम्हारी ताबियत कैसी ,है तो, टोनी कहता है कि बिल्कुल ठीक। जिसके कुछ दिन बाद टोनी हॉस्पिटल से डिसचार्ज लेकर घर चला जाता है।
यहां पर हुआ ये कि टोनी को कोई बिमारी नहीं थी। बल्कि वो वहम की बिमारी जिसे नोसीबो कहते हैं जूझ रहे थे। जिसे डॉक्टर ने प्लेसीबो इफ़ेक्ट यानी की सकारात्मक सोच से ठीक कर दिया। तो यहां पर आप शायद इस बात से कंफूज हो गए हैं कि नोसीबो और प्लेसीबो इफ़ेक्ट आखिर हैं क्या.. तो चलिए जानते हैं कि ये दोनों क्या होते हैं…
जब कहा जा रहा होता है कि अब तो इन्हें कोई चमत्कार ही बचा सकता है, तो उसका अर्थ होता है कि अब तो इन्हें कोई प्लेसीबो इफ़ेक्ट ही बचा सकता है यानी की सकारात्मक सोच ।
प्लेसीबो-इफ़ेक्ट का पूरा प्रभाव मन और शरीर के रिश्ते पर आधारित है। प्लेसीबो-इफ़ेक्ट क्यूं इफ़ेक्टिव है, इसको लेकर कई मत और सिद्धांत हैं, लेकिन सबसे आम सिद्धांतों में से एक यह है कि प्लेसीबो प्रभाव किसी व्यक्ति की अपेक्षाओं के कारण प्रभावकारी होता है। यानी यदि कोई रोगी किसी गोली या कैप्सूल से कुछ होने की अपेक्षा रखता है, तो यह संभव है कि प्लेसीबो वाली मीठी गोली से तो नहीं, उसके शरीर के अंदर के कैमिकल लोचे से वो प्रभाव उत्पन्न होंगे जो वास्तविक गोली से हुए होते।
प्लेसीबो के प्रभाव से वास्तविक शारीरिक परिवर्तन होते देखे गए हैं. जैसे कुछ अध्ययनों से पता चला है कि प्लेसीबो-प्रभाव से बॉडी में एंडॉर्फिन के उत्पादन में वृद्धि होती है। एंडॉर्फिन शरीर में ही उत्पन्न होने वाले प्राकृतिक दर्द निवारकों में से एक रसायन है।
हम आपको ये भी बता दें कि प्लेसीबो हमेशा लाभकारी ही हो, ऐसा नहीं है। इसके प्रभाव सकारात्मक और नकारात्मक, दोनों हो सकते हैं। इन नकारात्मक प्रभावों को नोसीबो इफेक्ट कहते हैं। प्लेसबो की ही तरह नोसेबो भी कई कारकों से प्रभावित होता है जैसे कि मौखिक सुझाव और व्यक्ति के अपने पिछले (effects of superstition) अनुभव। इसलिए यदि पहले कभी किसी ख़ास दवा के प्रति आपका अनुभव काफी बेकार है तो इस बात की संभावना बढ़ जाती है कि जब इस बार आप इस दवा को खाएं तो इसका आप पर कोई असर ही ना पड़े। कई बार तो ये दवाइयां फायदा करने की बजाय आपको नुकसान पहुंचा सकती हैं।
