New Zealand have become the first world test champions by defeating India in the final. Led by Kane Williamson, New Zealand was always ahead of India in the finals. India on the other hand never looked comfortable during the course of the final. This was the first test championship in the history of the game. Although in very four year a 50 over world cup has been organized. And also a T-20 world cup is organized after every two years.
But test championship was always going to be special as this format is the one which tests temperament and patience of every team. India and New Zealand were the two teams who made it to the final of the championship after two years of continuous hard work.
First edition of World Test Championship:-
This was the first edition of the Test championship. It was started in 2019 with the first test of Ashes that year. The final of the first ever world test championship was played in Southampton, England from June 18 to June 23. There was a reserve day as well to complete the final. Weather in England is always unpredictable. And in the finals 6th day came into play as two day of the match washed out completely.
The idea of organizing world test championship was approved in the year 2010 by International cricket Council. Before the start of the first world test championship, it was cancelled twice in year 2013 and 2017 respectively. But after so many problems and hurdles, World test championship was finally organized.
India Vs New Zealand in the finals of test championship:-
India and New Zealand were undoubtedly the two best teams to play in the finals. India defeated every top team during their run in world test championship. India lost only 1 series during their run in championship and that too against New Zealand. India lost to New Zealand 2-0 when they against this team in year 2020. New Zealand on the other hand won against some top teams during their run the championship.
The story of the big final:-
New Zealand were the favorites before going into the finals. Because of the conditions. The condition in Southampton is quite similar to that of New Zealand. In the finals New Zealand won the toss and decided to ball. Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill started well in overcast condition. But the Kyle Jamison the new sensation from New Zealand came into game and provided blackcaps breakthrough. India finished with 217 on the board in the first innings with vice captain Ajinkya Rahane scoring 49. New Zealand in response posted 249 in their first innings with lead of 32 runs. Devon convey was the highest run getter for New Zealand with score of 54.
Fans were expecting some counter attack form Indian batsman in the second innings. Rohit Sharma showed some intent but none of the Indian batsman looked settled in front of New Zealand pace attack. India bowled out for 170 in the second innings. New Zealand was set up to chase 139 to win the inaugural edition of the world test championship. And blackcaps have done it quite easily.
Hero of the final- Kyle Jamison
Undoubtedly, Kyle Jamison was the hero of the final. He won the man of the match award for his performance in the game. In the first innings he took 5 big wickets. And in the second inning his picked up 2 wickets. Viral Kohli was got out to Jamison in both the innings.
In this low scoring test championship final, he scored quick fire 21 from the bat. And this innings of him helped New Zealand to take lead in the first innings.
New Zealand Won ICC tournament after 20 years:-
Since champions trophy in year 2000, this was the first time when New Zealand won any ICC tournament. Country with around only few millions of people have made it look very easy. But this was the result of their hard work.
In the year 2015 they reached in the finals of the ICC world cup. And in 2019 also they were the runners up. The 2019 cricket world cup final was heart break for New Zealand. But now they can say that they are the world champions. Every player of the team contributed in this huge win. Kane Williamson, world’s favorite cricket team skipper has made it look very simple to everyone. He was leading from front scoring 49 and unbeaten 51 in the finals. He was also the highest run getter for the team in this test championship.
