A relentless heatwave sweeping across large parts of India has forced several state governments to announce immediate school closures, as temperatures continue to climb to dangerous levels. With the mercury crossing 45°C in multiple regions, authorities are scrambling to protect students from the escalating health risks.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the current heatwave conditions are among the most severe recorded in recent years, with no immediate relief expected over the coming days.

Schools Shut as Heatwave Intensifies
State governments in regions including West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and parts of Uttar Pradesh have ordered the temporary shutdown of schools, both government and private institutions.
In West Bengal, officials announced that all primary and secondary schools will remain closed until conditions improve. Authorities cited “extreme heat exposure risks” for children, especially during afternoon hours.
Similarly, Bihar has revised school timings and, in several districts, suspended classes entirely after reports of students falling ill due to heat exhaustion.
Temperatures Cross Danger Mark
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in multiple districts, warning of “severe heatwave conditions” with temperatures ranging between 44°C and 47°C.
Cities across eastern and northern India are experiencing:
- Scorching daytime temperatures
- Hot, dry winds (loo conditions)
- Minimal nighttime cooling
Weather experts warn that prolonged exposure could lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and other serious health complications, particularly among children and the elderly.

Government Issues Urgent Advisory
Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures, including:
- Avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours
- Stay hydrated and wear light clothing
- Use ORS and cooling methods to prevent heatstroke
- Ensure children remain indoors
Local administrations are also coordinating with hospitals to remain on high alert for heat-related emergencies.
Parents and Students Concerned
The sudden closures have brought mixed reactions. While many parents welcomed the decision as necessary, concerns remain about academic disruptions.
“I’m relieved my child is safe at home, but I’m worried about missed classes,” said a parent in Kolkata.
Education departments are reportedly considering online classes or revised academic calendars to compensate for lost time.

When Will Relief Arrive?
Meteorologists suggest that a possible change in wind patterns or pre-monsoon showers could bring slight relief, but not before several days of continued extreme heat.
The India Meteorological Department has indicated that heatwave conditions are likely to persist through the week, urging states to remain vigilant.
A Growing Climate Concern
Experts are increasingly linking the intensity and frequency of such heatwaves to broader climate patterns. Rising global temperatures are making extreme weather events more common, raising urgent questions about infrastructure preparedness and public safety policies.
