History
Mehbooba mufti was the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Gulshan Ara. She was born and brought up in 1959 in Akhran Nowpora, J&K, India. She has completed her Masters from Government College for Women and also has a Law Degree from the University of Kashmir.
She was an ex-Bombay Mercantile Bank employee after marriage she turned into an activist cum Political leader through the support of her ex-husband who was a political analyst, an animal-rights activist, and was briefly with the National Conference party. Mehbooba mufti has 2 daughters.
Detention Diaries
Mufti, was the first women chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016, who was detained along with CMs Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah and other regional leaders on 5 August 2019 as she tried to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories and effectively scrap Article 370.
Soon after her detention, her daughter, Iltija Mufti took over her Mufti’s twitter account and wrote a letter to the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner asking him to shift her mother to a place better equipped for the valley’s winter. 5 August 2019.
Her detention diaries do not end here. She was again detained in February 2020 as she was violating Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act but soon got released.
Again, she got detained on 25 Nov 2020 and was not allowed to meet Waheed Para, who was senior PDP Leader and was arrested by the National Investigating Agency earlier that week.
Political career
In 1996, Mehbooba was one of the recognized faces to be elected from Bijbehara on an Indian National Congress ticket. She has worked as a Leader taking on the government of chief minister Farooq Abdullah.
Later on, she resigned her assembly seat and contested for the parliamentary elections in 1999 from Srinagar, where she was defeated by Omar Abdullah.
But she won the Pahalgam seat in the state assembly from South Kashmir by defeating Rafi Ahmed Mir. Then in 2002 assembly elections, she was elected from Anant nag seat in 2004 and 2014. Mufti have defeated many recognized faces like defeated Mirza Mehboob Beg.
Undisputed Queen
Mufti father left for Jannat in 2016, but he left a great political career for Mufti in alliance with BJP which she took forward and on April 4, 2016, she took an oath as first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Overview of her Career
She is the first lady who won a seat by elections in the election of 2016, where she focused on settling of Rohingyas.
But on 19 June 2018, she resigned as chief minister of Kashmir. Though she again tried from Anant nag seat but lost it to Hasnain Masoodi of National Conference.
